Any angler who has been fishing the salt for a
length of time has heard stories about a striped bass will eat. Doesn’t
matter if you part take of saltwater flyfishing, spin fish, surf cast, bait fish or fish
from a boat. Stories abound about the thing people have found in a bass’s
stomach.
With this article I will add my 2-cents to the
legend.
The following pictures come from a striped bass I
took in the late night hours (approx 2:30am) on May 26th, 2001.
Sorry, can’t say the exact spot (let an angler have some mysteries) but
will say it was in the Robert Moses/Fire Island Inlet area of Long Island’s
South Shore (New York).
Here’s a picture of the fish in it’s whole:

She was 38 inches long and weighted 24 pounds.
When I filleted the bass here’s what was found in the
stomach:

Those are fluke (summer flounder). Sizes ranged from
6 to 10 inches.

and an eel too!

This is probably a conger eel. It was approximately
8 inches long.
Note: After further discussion with other surf
casters, it is also possible the above fish was a kingfish. They were very
numerous in the bays during the season this bass was caught.
And despite a full belly this fish still took my
offering!
