Worms are a favorite food of nearly all
game fish. In particular, vast hordes of worms come out each spring to breed. This
"worm hatch" occurs on the East Coast from Maine down to the Carolinas, usually
reaching it's peak around the June full moon. When fishing "the hatch" game
fish, especially striped bass, will refuse nearly all lures and artificials that don't
resemble the tiny worms they are feeding on. Even when worms aren't visible, predatory
game fish seem to know instinctively what it is and readily strike at it. These flies are
best fished dead drift in a current or on a VERY slow retrieve. The flies are also good in
other areas were a red worm-style pattern is called for.
