Lefty Kreh, Chico Fernandez, Kenneth E. Bay, Joe Brooks, Stu Ape and
many others - these are
the legendary names of the Fathers of modern saltwater fly fishing. Their techniques, equipment and
of course fly patterns laid the foundations for much of the sport we enjoy today. These
patterns and fly tying techniques inspired fly fishers to develop new styles, experiment with different materials,
sizes, colors, etc. Their influence can still be seen in many of the
"modern" saltwater fly patterns commonly used today.
These flies when they were first
tied represented some of the most creative and innovative thinking in
saltwater flies. At the time,
fly tiers had to work with mostly natural materials and simple colors. They didn't have
the benefit of the wide selection of synthetic materials and a rainbow of colors
contemporary fly tiers enjoy today.
On these pages we have created a selection of many of these
"classic" saltwater fly patterns. Each fly is tied to the original recipe as specified by the
Masters of the sport who first tied them. Many hours of effort are put into each pattern:
researching the original specifications, collecting the same materials used, and of course
tying the flies to be as historically accurate as possible.
- Real working flies! - They may be older patterns but they
are just as effective today as they were when first created.
- A piece of history - These flies are the basis for many
of the flies we use to. Let them inspire you to greatness also!
- A unique flavor - Add a piece of nostalgia to your
trophies, framing, and shadow boxes.
